Pedestrians feel the heat

Pedestrians

feel the heat

Crossing city roads has become a Herculean task for pedestrians in Kochi. Sometimes, it takes a long time to cross over on account of the stream of vehicles passing by. The aged and the physically challenged persons find it very hard, especially on peak hours. Drivers give scant respect to traffic rules and zebra crossings are blatantly ignored. Often, motorists increase the speed and hoot the horn to scare away pedestrians at zebra crossings. Our law enforcing system should wake up to the situation and book erring drivers. If drivers do not obey traffic rules, the authorities should go for legal proceedings. The patrolling party on motorbikes can intervene effectively whenever pedestrians are seen stranded. The authorities concerned should open their eyes to the grave situation.

Losing charm

Fort Kochi beach is no more an attraction of beach-lovers. The once shining `Queen of Arabian sea' conquered the hearts of millions with its vast area of sand-bed and the rearing waves. But today the beach has lost its sand-bed, thanks to the tsunami.

The existing meagre sand on the beach is fully occupied by African sea weeds and unhygenic elements. If the present condition of the beach is viewed, one should not be blamed for thinking that the Tourism Department, Greater Cochin Development Authority and Kochi Corporation have completely abandoned the beach from the map of tourism development projects.

However, the regular sunset viewers occupy the pathway provided on the protection wall on the northern side of the beach but its surroundings are not maintained well. The budget proposals and proclamations of the civic bodies all remain in paper.

Will the authorities concerned wake up to implement the Fort Cochin Beach Beautification Project at least in the near future?
