BANGALORE: Members of the Unaided Private Schools Horata Samiti on Tuesday took out a march from Chiklalbagh to the Mahatma Gandhi statue on M.G. Road to protest against the State Government's order to derecognise schools that have not adopted Kannada as the medium of instruction from standard one to four. They have demanded that the State Government rescind its order to derecognise English-medium schools from the coming academic year and restore the status quo. N. Venkatachalaiah, president, said that at a time when ICSE and CBSE schools in the State were teaching only in English, this move by the State Government was unfair to students as it did not give them a fair chance in this competitive world. In a list of demands, the samiti has said that the Government should introduce one medium of instruction throughout the State. It should make it mandatory for ICSE and CBSE schools in the State to adopt Kannada as a medium of instruction. The samiti has said that with other schools adopting English as the medium, schools that have to comply with the order would find it difficult to run their institutions. In 1994, the Supreme Court passed a judgement stating that schools should teach either in the mother tongue or the regional language. The State Government was fighting a case in court on what the medium of instruction should be for schools approved before 1994. The samiti has demanded that the State Government take action to get the stay vacated.
