One arrested in Pragati Maidan case

NEW DELHI: One of the culprits who allegedly threatened and attempted to outrage the modesty of a young dancer at gunpoint in a restaurant at Pragati Maidan on December 6 has been arrested. The police have seized his revolver.

The accused, Mani Ram Verma, owns a jewellery shop at Chandni Chowk. The police said Mani Ram -- who had organised a party to celebrate the birthday of his son on December 6 night -- was among those who had threatened the dancer and tried to outrage her modesty.

Three alleged

dacoits arrested

NEW DELHI: Three alleged dacoits involved in several cases of attempt to murder, assault on police personnel and chain snatching have been arrested by the North-West Delhi police.

According to the police, the accused, inspired by the latest Bollywood films Dhoom and Dhoom: 2, indulged in daredevil acts and used the latest bikes to commit crimes. They maintained a very lavish lifestyle and lived in a posh area of Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh.

Nearly 20 cases of snatching registered at various police stations including Mangolpuri, Sultanpuri, Prashant Vihar, Shamilar Bagh, Model Town, Saraswati Vihar and Kirti Nagar have been worked out with their arrest, the police said.

Parakeets rescued, one arrested

NEW DELHI: Over 1,000 rosy ringed parakeets brought from Uttaranchal have been rescued at Seelampur in North-East Delhi. One person has been arrested in this connection.

The police mounted the raid on a tip-off provided by a non-government organisation, People for Animals. In all, 1,075 parakeets were rescued and Ghulam Rasool, who had allegedly brought the birds from Uttaranchal to sell them off in Delhi, was arrested.

Traders to hold rally

in Karol Bagh

NEW DELHI: The Confederation of All-India Traders (CAIT) will hold a "Sangharsh Sankalp" rally at Ajmal Khan Park in Karol Bagh this coming Sunday in protest against the sealing drive.

In a statement, CAIT has demanded regularisation of all commercial establishments that came up before December 31, 2005, and an immediate halt to the sealing drive. Its other demands include rollback of hefty conversion charges and regularisation of 1,472 unauthorised colonies.
