This Day That Age
The Chief Election Commissioner, Mr. Sukumar Sen, told a press conference in New Delhi on December 13 that polling for Parliamentary and State Assembly seats, throughout the country, would be held between February 25 and March 12, 1957. The results would be gazetted by March 31 next. Only in two areas - the snow-bound areas of Himachal Pradesh and possibly certain Himalayan regions of Uttar Pradesh - the polling may have to be postponed. Notifications ordering the elections would be issued simultaneously for the whole of India by the end of the third week of January. (Nominations are made ten days after the notifications are issued). He said there would be no polling in Kashmir, which had its own election laws. Kashmir's six representatives in the Lok Sabha are elected by the State Assembly and then nominated formally by the President.
