BJP MPs' plea to Pawar

NEW DELHI: A group of BJP MPs from the State has urged Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar to help end the strike by sugarcane farmers in the State by fixing statutory minimum price for sugarcane at least Rs. 1,400 a tonne.

In a letter to Mr. Pawar, they pointed out that sugar factories in the State were not getting any special package from the Centre. The letter was signed by MPs Suresh Angadi (Belgaum), G.M. Siddeshwar (Davanegere) and P.C. Gaddigouadar (Bagalkot). — Special Correspondent

Award for doctor

Udupi: The Janapada Vaidya Siri Award 2006-07, instituted by the Folklore Medicine Research Centre, SDM College of Ayurveda, was presented to R. Krishnamurthy of Yalandur, Mysore, here on Wednesday.

Speaking after receiving the award, Mr. Krishnamurthy said that edicine was a noble profession and doctors should be more considerate towards poor patients. — Staff Correspondent

Recruitment rally

Bidar: Airmen recruitment rally for candidates from the State will be held in Mangalore from January 12 to 17. Those born between January 1988 and March 1991 are eligible for the Group Y non-technical posts. They should have obtained at least 50 per cent marks in the SSLC examination. Candidates from Bidar should attend the test on January 14 at 7 a.m. Candidates for Group X technical posts should have passed PUC.The candidates should carry documents and seven passport- sized photographs, a release said.— Staff Reporter

Four arrested on theft charge

HAVERI: A special team of the Haveri Police has recovered jewellery worth Rs. 2.5 lakh that was stolen from various houses in Ranebennur and Haveri towns. Superintendent of Police, Haveri district, H.N. Siddanna told presspersons here that four persons had been arrested in connection with the thefts. He gave the names of the arrested as Basavaraj Govindaro Nikkam, Gulaganjikoppa of Dharwad taluk, Mehaboob Ali Khadarsab Soudagar of Haveri, Iranna Gadigeppa Angadi of Koodala in Hangal and D. Choudappa of Chitradurga.

With the arrest, four cases of thefts in Ranebennur and one in Haveri town have been solved, he said. — Staff Correspondent

Farmers call for bandh

DAVANGERE: The Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha, Kisan Sabha and other farmers organisations have called for Davangere bandh on Thursday demanding that the State Government fix a scientific price for paddy crop. Farmers have decided not to carry out any kind of transaction in APMC and the arecanut market. They have also appealed to all business establishments, cinema houses, hotels, bar and restaurants to cooperate with their agitation and close down their shops for a day.

Recovered

HAVERI: The Haveri Police have also recovered three stolen motorcycles worth Rs. 82,000 and have arrested one person in this connection.

Mr. Siddanna gave the name of the arrested as Jelani Kundgol of Hubli. The arrested have been remanded to judicial custody. The members of the special team have been awarded cash prize for their work. — Staff Correspondent

Agitation planned

MYSORE: Members of the Federation of Karnataka State Over Aged Teachers' Association will go on a fast from Friday urging the Government to fulfil their long-pending demand, according to a press release from federation president K.S. Dinesh. He said despite a promise from Minister for Primary and Secondary Education Basavaraj Horatti to reserve 40 per cent of vacancies for over aged teachers, the Government had failed in issuing an order in this regard. Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, who too gave a promise in this regard, had failed in realising it, he added. — Staff Correspondent

Power shutdown

HUBLI: Owing to work on charging underground power cable network the following areas in Hubli will have no power supply on Thursday between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., Hubli Electricity Supply Company has said in a release.

The areas affected are Ganeshpet, Goodshed Road, Buddha vihar, Bharat Petroleum, Mantur Road, Power House, Tabibland, Hindustan Ice Factory, Ganesh Nagar, Heggeri Colony, Bhuvaneshwari Nagar, Siddharoodh Nagar, Srinivasa Nagar, Nagalinga Nagar, Sahasrarjun Nagar, Jagadish Nagar and surrounding areas. — Staff Correspondent

Stolen

HUBLI: A bag containing Rs. 3.35 lakh kept in a car was stolen on Tuesday. The incident occurred very close to the Suburban Police Station. The cash belonged to Girimallappa Koti, a transport businessman of Hubli. He had left the bag with the driver of the car. According to sources, a person tricked the driver and made off with the cash. — Staff Correspondent

Magisterial inquiry

MYSORE: A magisterial inquiry will be conducted into the death of a person while in judicial custody, at the Sub-Divisional Magistrate office on December 28, according to a press release from the Assistant Commissioner. M.A. Keshava, who was lodged at the Mysore Central Jail, died at the PKTB Hospital on August 19. The district Magistrate, who has ordered a magisterial probe into the incident, has appointed the Assistant Commissioner as the inquiry authority. The Sub-Divisional Magistrate has appealed to the parties concerned to appear before him on December 28.

Drawing contest

MYSORE: Suttur Math will organise a State-level on-the-spot drawing competition for students studying from 1st standard to 10th standard to mark the Shivarathreeshwara Shivayogi Jathra festival on December 10. While students from the 1st to 4th standards can draw pictures on any subjects, those from the 5th to 7th standards should draw pictures relating to wildlife protection. Students from the 8th to 10th standards can draw pictures of freedom fighters. GULBARGA: Principal of the Siddartha Law College V.C. Mathpati has been elected to the Governing Council of Indian Law Institute. Prof. Mathpati is the only person to be elected to the governing council of the prestigious institute from Karnataka and the second from South India. The other member from South India to be elected to the body was former Attorney General of Madras High Court Masilamani.

Manipal: The condition of Medical Education Minister V.S. Acharya, who was admitted to the Kasturba Hospital on Monday due to exhaustion, is improving. Medical Superintendent and Chief Operating Officer of the Kasturba Hospital D.P. Saraswat told The Hindu on Wednesday that "Dr. Acharya is stable. He is progressing well." — Staff Correspondent

Bangalore: Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd., Karnataka Circle, has bagged the prestigious National Energy Conservation Award 2006, instituted by the Union Ministry of Power. According to a press release here on Wednesday, the first and second prizes in the office-building sector has been awarded to the New Telecom Building, Basaveswara Circle, and the Regional Telecom Training Centre, Mysore. The award will be presented on Thursday in New Delhi. T.S. Staff cautioned

BANGALORE: Government employees participating in Thursday's strike will be liable for disciplinary action, an official release said here on Wednesday. The Federation of Karnataka State Government Employees' Association has, in a letter to the Secretary, Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms, on November 29, conveyed its intention to participate in the strike. A DPAR press release has said that as per service rules, Government employees are not allowed to take part in strikes. Action will be initiated against those violating the rule as per Karnataka State Civil Service (Prohibition of Strikes) Section 1966, Karnataka Civil Services (Transfer, regulation and Appeals) rules 1957, the release has said. — Staff Reporter
