KOLLAM: Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan will lay the foundation stone for a seven-storey building for the District Hospital here on Saturday. At the same function, Labour Minister P.K. Gurudasan will lay the foundation stone for a three- storey building attached to the adjacent Government Victoria Hospital for Women. Agriculture Minister Mullakara Ratnakaran will inaugurate the new Intensive Coronary Care Unit (ICCU) of the District Hospital. District panchayat president K. Devaki and District Medical Officer Elizabeth John Zacharia told presspersons here on Wednesday that the new block for the District Hospital was being constructed at a cost of Rs.10 crore and the Government Victoria Hospital block at a cost of Rs.98 lakh. For the District Hospital block, Rs.50 lakh would be sanctioned from the Local Area Fund of Kollam MP P. Rajendran, an equal amount from the district panchayat and Rs.2 crore from the District Cooperative Bank. The balance would be collected from other institutions, including the City Corporation and other local bodies. In the fist phase, the first floor of the block would be constructed, which would house the trauma care unit of the hospital. The new block for the Victoria Hospital would house a comprehensive paediatric unit. The fund for constructing the block would come from the European Commission. On completion, the other six floors of the District Hospital block would house the new operation theatres, post-operative care unit, cardiology unit and the ENT unit. The new ICCU was constructed with the funds, Rs.28 lakh, provided by the district panchayat.
