NEW DELHI: Overseas Indian Affairs Minister Vayalar Ravi and visiting Labour Minister of the United Arab Emirates Ali bin Abdullah Al Ka'abi signed an agreement on Wednesday to facilitate recruitment of workers and regulate their terms of employment.
Bilateral committee
Under the agreement, a bilateral committee is to be set up (consisting of three members from the two countries) to review employment opportunities in the UAE and the availability of corresponding skills in India.
1.4 million Indians
An official release said 1.4 million Indian citizens are living and working in the UAE, whose total population is estimated at five million. In 2001, an estimated 56,673 Indian workers travelled to the UAE while the figure jumped to 1,94,412 in 2005.
