Higher procurement price for copra sought

Special Correspondent

S.R. Balasubramoniyan met M. Karunanidhi

CHENNAI: Congress leader S.R. Balasubramoniyan met Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi at his residence on Tuesday and impressed on him the need for higher procurement price for copra.

Talking to presspersons later, he said if the State Government could give Rs.4 per kg in addition to the Central procurement price of Rs.35.9 per kg, farmers would get about Re.1 per coconut.

Input costs were growing and the State should support coconut farmers, he said. Mr. Balasubramoniyan said the Chief Minister had agreed to meet representatives of milk producers next week.

Milk producers have been demanding a hike in procurement price since it has not been increased for many years.

The Congress leader welcomed the decision to introduce Tamil as a language of the High Court.

On the desecration of the Periyar statue and subsequent events, he said the sentiments of people should not be hurt.
