As part of its NSS activities, Kodaikanal Christian College has donated a house constructed at a cost of Rs.1.5 lakh on a three-cent plot to Palaniamma, a homeless widow who has a mentally retarded son. The college chairman and principal, Sam Abraham, formally donated the house to the beneficiary at the valedictory function of a NSS camp at Koiyyaparai village in Shenbaganur, six km from Kodaikanal on Wednesday. In his address, Dr. Abraham said social service was not mere words but sincere actions. The Madurai Kamaraj University NSS coordinator, S. Raju, congratulated the college management and the volunteers for their selfless service.
Earlier, the volunteers created awareness among rural people on sanitation, women development, poverty eradication and social welfare. They also enacted short plays on various themes, including adverse impact of AIDS, importance of small savings. A free medical camp was also held at the camp.
Indian Institute of Astrophysics conducted an `international school on solar physics' at the Kodaikanal Observatory of the institute in Kodaikanal recently with an aim to promote study of solar physics among students. Mumbai University professor S.K. Chitre, in his address, gave a lecture on the Sun. Scientist in-charge of IIA K. Sundara Raman said that the observatory, located close to earth's equator at an altitude of 2,343 metres above mean sea level on Kodaikanal Hills, was an ideal place for solar observation. The aim of the school was to attract bright young students to this field of study. Even as the IIA has been conducting School of Solar Physics every year, he said, for the first time, faculty members and students at the national and international levels took part. This trend would continue in the future also, he assured.
Earlier, the Director of IIA, S.S. Hasan, welcomed the gathering. Eminent scientists and students doing doctoral degrees from several countries took part.
The Syed Hameedha Arts and Science College, Kilakarai conducted a capacity building programme for girl students of the college recently.
Students were also oriented towards achieving this goal. A. Mustafa, Principal, presided over the function. Priyadharsini welcomed the gathering and Jeevadharani proposed a vote of thanks.
`People should not resort to self medication, but approach the doctor to diagnose the disease and get medicine.' This was stressed at the National Pharmacy Week celebrations held at Sankaralingam Bhuvaneswari College of Pharmacy, Sivakasi, between November 23 and 25. A rally was flagged by B. Ganesan, Revenue Divisional Officer, to mark the inauguration of the celebrations. Seminars on various topics were also held. Abhay Daramsi, Principal, K.M.C.H. College of Pharmacy, Coimbatore, presided over the valedictory function.
