R-Day parade venue not to be shifted

NEW DELHI: The Government on Wednesday ruled out any move to either shift the venue of the Republic Day parade or convert it into a biennial event.

Admitting that the people of Delhi were inconvenienced by the rehearsals, Defence Minister A.K. Antony said the armed forces had taken several measures to minimise hardship to the citizens.

Though there was some disruption to daily activity in the national capital, it was the people of Delhi "who are more anxious" to stage the parade every year. "After considering all aspects, successive governments have said there is no question of stopping or reducing the frequency of the parade," Mr. Antony told the Rajya Sabha.
