Urges Chief Minister not to propose constitutional amendment
|
HYDERABAD:
Mala Mahanadu has urged Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy not to propose any constitutional amendment enabling Scheduled Caste categorisation saying it will harm the interests of the UPA not only in the State but also across the country.
In a memorandum submitted to the Chief Minister on Tuesday, Mala Mahanadu expressed concern over the Centre's reported move to enact a legislation empowering States to decide the list of SCs. The move would harm the interests of SCs leading to interference of upper castes and would serve the cause of those who were interested in suppressing the people. "It will open a Pandora's box," Mahanadu president J. Prabhakara Rao said in the memorandum.
Rejected
He recalled that the categorisation was stuck down by the Andhra Pradesh High Court and was also rejected by the National Commission for SC/STs, which suggested alternatives to categorisation. However, those reports were never made public by the previous TDP Government.
