Man killed in accident

THRISSUR : A 75-year-old man was killed when he bike he was riding collided with a bus of the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation at Kuriachira, near here, on Tuesday evening, according to the police. The deceased was identified as Jose of Paliyekkara House in Chiyyaram. The accident occurred around 5 p.m., the police said. — Staff Reporter

Man run over by lorry

THRISSUR: A 70-year-old man was run over by a lorry at Arthattu in the Kunnamkulam police station limits on Tuesday. The decreased was identified as Chakkunni of Alur, a former employee with the Public Works Department. The accident occurred around 4 p.m., the police said. — Staff Reporter

`Cooperative sector in State superior'

THRISSUR: The Cooperative movement in Kerala is far superior to that in other States, Chief Executive of the National Cooperative Union Bhagwati Prasad has said. He was addressing a seminar on `Human resource development in cooperatives' organised by the College of Cooperation Banking and Management under the Kerala Agricultural University. Kadakampally Surendran, president of the State Cooperative Bank, inaugurated the seminar. — Staff Reporter

Interest rates up

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State Bank of Travancore (SBT) has increased the interest rates on domestic and non-resident ordinary term deposits with effect from December 14, the bank said in a press release on Wednesday. For deposits below Rs.15 lakh, the new rates are: 4.5 per cent for seven to 14 days, five per cent for 15 to 45 days, 5.5 per cent for 46 to 90 days, six per cent for 91 to 179 days, 6.75 per cent for 180 days to less than one year, 7.75 per cent for one year to less than two years and eight per cent for two years to five years. Resident senior citizens will get 0.5 per cent additional interest on deposits of Rs. 5,000 and above for periods of one year and above. Additional interest of 0.25 per cent will be given for amounts of Rs.15 lakh and above deposited for periods of 180 days and above, the bank said. — Special Correspondent

Join strike

KOCHI: Bank employees from the public, private, cooperative and rural banks would participate in the all-India general strike on Thursday, said a press release issued by the All India Bank Employees' Association here on Wednesday. The strike was against the policies of the Union Government that would wipe out people's banking, said the press release. - Staff Reporter

Catholic union plea

KOCHI: The All India Catholic Union has appealed to the Union Government to issue instructions to the All India Minority Commission to get detailed report on matters pertaining to the social, educational and economic causes related to the various denominations of Christians in India giving special importance to the ST/SC and OBC sections among them. A press release said here that the appeal was made at the working committee meeting of the Union in Bangalore on December 9 and 10. - Staff Reporter

No need to panic: IMA

KOCHI: The State branch of the Indian Medical Association has said that there is no need to be fearful of the vaccination programme being undertaken in the State under the National Health Project. A release said that it was not because of TT injection that a student died at Vattoli National Higher Secondary School early this week. The doctors who treated the girl had reached a conclusion that she died of viral encephalitis, the association said.
