COMMENDABLE EFFORT: Indian Coast Guard personnel and fishermen in action during the operation to salvage a mechanised fishing boat at the Thengaithittu estuary near Puducherry on Wednesday.
Puducherry: The Coast Guard, aided by fishermen, salvaged a sinking mechanised fishing boat at the Thengaithittu estuary in Puducherry on Wednesday. Commandant N. Somasundaram of the Coast Guard Station (Puducherry) and Deputy Commandant Ramba swung into action after being informed by the Department of Fisheries and the Fishermen's Welfare that a mechanised boat was sinking after it struck rocks along the coast. Commandant Somasundaram said the recently acquired interceptor boat and interceptor craft was pressed into service to salvage the boat, which suffered extensive damage. A. Murugan, of the Association of Mechanised Boat Owners of Puducherry, said 20 fishermen from different villages came in a boat and helpedthe coast guard personnel recover the sinking boat. He said the owner of the boat, Thangamani of Nallavadu village, was returning with three other fishermen after fishing for the last three days some some forty km away from the shore when the boat was tossed on to the boulders. Mr. Murugan said the entire catch was lost. The damage caused was valued at Rs.10 lakh.
