Petitioner withdraws PIL plea on CET

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The First Bench of the Madras High Court has expressed its displeasure at the manner in which a public interest litigation petition on abolition of Common Entrance Test (CET) for professional courses had been prepared.

The Bench comprising Chief Justice A.P. Shah and Justice K. Chandru also directed the petitioner, V. Manikandan, to withdraw the plea. When the petition came up for admission on Wednesday, the Judges wondered as to what was the need for the petitioner to club unconnected matters with the present PIL. They said if the PIL were dismissed it would affect the entire student community, who intend to challenge the proposed legislation. The petitioner then informed the Bench that he would withdraw the petition immediately.

The PIL had prayed for an order declaring as unconstitutional the Tamil Nadu Admission in Professional Educational Institutions Bill 2006 dispensing with the CET.
