CHENNAI: The second phase of the scheme to give land to landless farmers will begin on December 17. Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi will inaugurate the programme at Villupuram. A total of 25,806 acres will be given to 26,749 landless farmer families on that day, a press release said. Giving a break-up of the lands being presented, the release added that the Government had treated 5,305 acres of its land. This will be given to 5,399 landless farmer families. A further 10,547 acres of government land, which had been encroached upon, will be given to 15,614 landless farmer families. The Government has identified 9,953 acres of unusable land owned by small and medium farmers. This has been treated and will be given to 5,736 farmer families. Since the land is distributed across the State, Ministers would go to each of the districts to hand over the land to the landless. Among the senior Ministers, Finance Minister K. Anbazhagan will hand over lands in Kancheepuram; Arcot N. Veerasamy and Suresh Rajan in Kanyakumari; M.K. Stalin, Ko.Si. Mani and S.N.M. Ubaidullah in Thanjavur; Veerapandi K. Arumugham in Salem; Durai Murugan in Vellore; and K.N. Nehru in Tiruchi. The scheme began on September 17. So far, 23,440 landless farmers have been given 24,271 acres. The scheme will continue and more land would be identified, and, if required, treated and given to landless farmers.
