Extra kerosene to be supplied

ERODE: The Erode District Collector, D. Karthikeyan, said in a press release here family card holders of Erode town, municipality and town panchayat areas were entitled for two litres of kerosene along with their monthly quota in December.

Strike participation

ERODE: College lecturers and professors affiliated to the Association of University Teachers will participate in the strike, scheduled to be held on December 14, says a release from the Association.

Youth killed in accident

SALEM: A youth was killed and another injured when the motorcycle on which they were travelling collided with a goods auto rickshaw at Nangavalli, near here, on Tuesday. Balakrishnan (25) of Nangavalli died on way to hospital. Shanmuga Sundaram (22) of Vanavasi has been admitted to Mettur Government Hospital, the police said.

Sri Lankan boat seized

RAMANATHAPURAM: Indian Coast Guard on Wednesday seized a Sri Lankan boat at Vedhalai near here.

Acting on information, the Coast Guard personnel from Mandapam station rushed to the spot and took the boat into their custody. There was no information about how it came to the coast off Rameswaram and who came by the boat.

S.K. Chaudhary, Commandant, Coast Guard Station, Mandapam, told The Hindu that a detailed enquiry was ordered. Meanwhile, the `Q' branch police have launched a massive hunt along the Rameswaram coast. The personnel `searched suspected hideouts' in Mandapam, Pudumadam, Pirappanvalasai and Kundhukal. — Staff Reporter

Bail plea dismissed

MADURAI: The Madurai Bench of Madras High Court on Wednesday dismissed an anticipatory bail application moved by A. Arjun Sampath, State president of the Hindu Makkal Katchi. He was one among the eight accused of damaging the Periyar statue in Srirangam on December 7. Justice M. Jeyapaul declined to grant advance bail on the ground that the investigation was in the preliminary stage. — Staff Reporter

PMK to disband Tiruchi office-bearers

CHENNAI: The Pattali Makkal Katchi has decided to disband the existing team of office-bearers in Tiruchi district.

In a statement, G.K. Mani, president, said M. K. Periyasamy, Member of Legislative Assembly from Poompuhar, and V. Senthil, deputy secretary of the youth wing, would discuss with the leadership in appointing organisers at the level of district, panchyat union and towns. This arrangement would continue till the organisational elections were held. — Special Correspondent

Award for Tamil scholar

CHENNAI: Former Vice-Chancellor of the Manonmaniam Sundaranar University and Tamil scholar K.P. Aravanan has been chosen to receive the State Government's Thiruvalluvar Award.

The award, comprising a citation, gold medal and cash of Rs. 1 lakh, will be presented to Mr. Aravanan at the Thiruvalluvar day function to be held on January 16, according to a press release.

In addition to his in-depth knowledge of Tamil, Mr. Aravanan is also fluent in English, French and Malayalam.

He has also received many government awards for his books. — Special Correspondent

Bar association premises to reopen

CHENNAI: The Madras High Court has ordered reopening of the Perambalur Bar Association premises, which was sealed on November 11 following allegations of poll-related violence there.

The Bench, comprising Chief Justice A.P. Shah and Justice K. Chandru, also appointed senior advocate G. Rajagopalan election officer to conduct the association elections within four weeks.

It asked the jurisdictional Revenue Divisional Officer to remove the seal and hand over the premises and its keys to the local Judicial Magistrate.

Henceforth, the association premises will remain open from 9.30 a.m. to 7 p.m. on all working days. — Special Correspondent

Detained under Goondas Act

TIRUNELVELI: Commissioner of Police G. Uma Ganapathi Sastry has promulgated `141 Tamil Nadu City Police Act' within city limits for 15 days. In a statement, he said the Act would come into effect from the midnight of December 13.

Mr. Sastry also ordered the arrest of V. Saravanakumar (28) of Thiruvaadaanai, S. Sundar (29) of Devakottai, G. Chellapandi (28) of Devakottai, S. Chinnapandi (24) of Devakottai and R. Venkatesh (20) of Tirupur under the provisions of Goondas Act. They were involved in anti-social activities including burglary, issuing death threat, robbery etc. They were lodged in Palayamkottai Central Prison.

Four get life term

Tuticorin: A fast track court here sentenced four persons to life imprisonment on Wednesday. P. Jayakumar (31), Paulraj (23), D. Pattukumar (27) and K. Jayakumar (25) murdered Shankar (29) at Srivaikundam on July 11, 2002.

Two others accused in the case, Annamalai (22) and P. Murugan ( 22), were acquitted.

RI arrested

Tuticorin: A Revenue Inspector, Jayaraj (45), was arrested by the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption sleuths here on Tuesday evening for accepting bribe from a farmer.

Official sources said the accused was caught `red-handed' while he was receiving Rs. 500 from Shanmuganathan (42) for issuing a `no objection certificate' for free electricity connection to his field.

Water level

MADURAI: The water level in the Periyar dam stood at 132.70 feet with an inflow of 988 cusecs and a discharge of 1,275 cusecs. The level in the Vaigai dam was 59.71 feet with an inflow of 1,859 cusecs and a discharge of 1,841 cusecs. The combined Periyar credit stood at 7,188 mcft. — Staff Reporter

Painting competition

PUDUKOTTAI: The Vajpayee Charitable Trust here will conduct a painting competition for school students at 10 a.m. on December 25 at Kalaimagal Nursery and Primary School, Srinivasanagar. The competition would be held in four categories.

Examinations put off

Tiruchi: The Centre for Distance Education, Bharathidasan University, has announced that practical examinations for students of second year MCA at Tiruchi, Pudukottai and Karur centres has been postponed to January 4 and 5, 2007.

Mettur level

TIRUCHI: The level at the Mettur dam stood at 111.54 feet against its full level of 120 feet on Wednesday. The inflow was 4,662 cusecs and the discharge 1,000 cusecs. — Staff Reporter
