Indian sailors get silver

Special Correspondent

Saurav Ghosal assured of bronze

Doha: The Indian 7.5 Beneteau keel boat class team of Sanjeev Chauhan, Mahesh Ramachandran, Girdhari Yadav and Nitin Mongia ended up with the silver as they lost the match race final against Singapore in the 15th Asian Games here on Wednesday.

It was the second medal for India from sailing after the bronze the previous day.

The captain, Mahesh Ramachandran, was not happy to have finished with silver. "We came here to win the gold. The wind was all over the place today. In the morning the conditions were very light and we had to work hard. We got a penalty but the penalty didn't make a difference because we were able to catch up. The wind did not go in our direction and that cost us the gold", said Ramachandran.

The captain conceded that he could not blame the whether alone, for the defeat it in three of the four races, as it was the same for everyone. "The others performed pretty well'', he conceded.

India and Singapore had topped the preliminary league with the same number of points but the latter was ranked higher on the basis of having beaten India in the round-robin phase leading to the semifinals in which India defeated Thailand 3-1 and Singapore got past Korea 3-0.

Ghosal loses

There was an assured medal from squash even as Saurav Ghosal went down after a late revival against the defending champion Beng Hee Ong of Malaysia 1-9, 2-9, 9-6, 4-9 in the semifinals.
