YSR liable to legal action: Naidu

Special Correspondent

`The Chief Minister has wilfully violated the law'

HYDERABAD: Maintaining that Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy is not entitled to continue in his post, Leader of the Opposition N. Chandrababu Naidu has demanded that the law should take its course in the wake of his "confession of violating the law," by holding excess land.

Talking to reporters soon after Speaker K.R. Suresh Reddy adjourned the Assembly after the Opposition stalled the proceedings demanding a discussion on the issue on Wednesday, he alleged that the Chief Minister `wilfully violated' the law and action should be taken against him. He said Dr. Reddy had contravened the provisions of Andhra Pradesh Land Reforms (Ceiling on Agricultural Holdings) Act, 1973, Andhra Pradesh Assigned Lands (Prohibition of Transfers) Act, 1977 and Andhra Pradesh Forest Act and was liable to be prosecuted.

Mr. Naidu said Dr. Reddy was not new to politics. Did he not realise during visits to the estate that one could hold only up to 54 acres. The total extent of `Idupulapaya Estate' was 753 acres and 618 acres, which the Chief Minister surrendered, included assigned and forest lands. He criticised Dr. Reddy announcing the decision outside when the Assembly was in session.

The TDP president said it was not proper to adjourn the House when all parties wanted a discussion. The Speaker could have directed the Government to make a statement. He made it clear that TDP members would continue to insist on a debate on Thursday, saying there would be no compromise on it.

Dattatreya's view

State BJP president Bandaru Dattatreya has urged Governor Rameshwar Thakur to dismiss Dr. Reddy if he failed to step down for violating the statute by holding lands of dalits, tribals and the Government for 30 years. In a statement on Wednesday, Mr. Dattatreya demanded that cases also be booked against the Chief Minister. He wanted declaration of `benami assets' that were in the name of Dr. Reddy and his relatives.
