VISAKHAPATNAM: G. Damodaran of Services created the first record of the ongoing senior National weightlifting championships at the Swarna Bharathi Indoor Stadium here on Wednesday, the penultimate day of the competitions. Damodaran erased Railway lifter Amarjit Singh's 1999 marks in snatch, clean and jerk and total in the 105kg category.
Failed attempt
By lifting 153 kg in snatch in his second attempt, Damodaran erased the 152 kg mark but could not improve it further when he failed with 155 kg. In clean and jerk he cleared 196 kg in the second attempt to improve Amarjit's record of 195 kg. This lift also obliterated the railway lifter's total record of 347 kg by two kg. Damodaran successfully lifted 200 kg in his final attempt to set two more records.
G. Senthil Kumar of Railways won the 94 kg category gold with a total of 328 kg with Balvinder Kumar of Punjab (307) and Abdul Arif Khan of Madhya Pradesh (298) following him for the second and third places.
Fine style
On Tuesday night, Sateesha Rai of Banks Sports Control Board won the 85 kg category in fine style. A. Janeswari Devi of Manipur won the women's 75 kg title with a total lift of 208 kg in a keen competition with. The results: Men 105 kg: 1. G. Damodaran (Services, snatch 153 kg, clean and jerk 200 kg, total 353 kg, all records), 2. Gurmeet Singh (Police), 3. Sandeep Kumar (UP). (Old records: 152 kg, 195 kg and 353 kg by Amarjit Singh of Railways in 1999 at Kalyan). 94 kg: 1. G. Senthil Kumar (Rlys, 147, 181 and 328 kg), 2. Balvinder Singh (Punjab), 3. Abdul Arif Khan (MP). 85 kg: 1. Sateesha Rai (Banks, 144, 180 and 324 kg), 2. A.M. Pandian (Uttaranchal), 3. I.B. Singh (Services). Women: 75 kg: 1. A. Janeswari Devi (Manipur, 94, 114 and 208 kg), 2. Sumati Devi (Police), 3. P. Laxmi (AP).
