Madras triumphs

KOLKATA: Madras University emerged champion in the all-India inter-university cricket tournament and regained the Rohinton Baria Trophy after a gap of a decade here on Wednesday. Madras defeated Mysore by 115 runs in the two-day final here.

Electing to bat, Madras scored 311 for nine in 86 overs.

This was mainly thanks to its captain Xavier Thalaivan Sargunam's sedate 112 (224b, 6x4) and useful contributions from S. Suresh Kumar (68, 106b, 4x4, 2x6) and K.B. Arun Karthik (57, 138b, 5x4).

Two century partnerships also helped the team's cause. Thalaivan and Karthik put on 113 for the second wicket and Thalaivan and Suresh Kumar added a further 125 for the third wicket on the opening day on Tuesday.

The scores: Madras 311 for eight in 86 overs (X.T. Sargunam 112, S. Suresh Kumar 68, K.B. Arun Karthik 57, Prithiviraj three for 82) bt Mysore 196 in 58.1 overs (S.P. Manjunath 44, Arun Kumar B. 35, V.R.S. Guru Kedarnath four for 58, M. Raja three for 39) by 115 runs. — Special Correspondent
