Kateryna Lahno arrives

Special Correspondent

  • Kateryna is the youngest WGM in the game
  • The Ukrainian lost to Negi in Satka in June

NEW DELHI: At the end of a photo-shoot, Kateryna Lahno could barely stop laughing. The Ukrainian chess superstar, the youngest WGM in the game, was made to pose for nearly an hour by a seasoned photographer from a daily newspaper and she went through the motions with the ease of a trained model. Though Kateryna found the whole process quite funny, she enjoyed every moment of it. When it was time to review the photographs on the television of her hotel room, she giggled even louder.

"It was fun," said the charming 16-year-old Kateryna, here to play in the Amity Grandmasters Challenge match against the world's youngest Grandmaster Parimarjan Negi beginning on Sunday.

Kateryna, accompanied by her coach Ruslan Sherbakov, landed here in the early hours of Wednesday four days ahead of the 18-game match, comprising six games each of classical, rapid and blitz formats spread over 10 days.
