MYSORE: Terming the incident of defiling of an Infant Jesus statue at Avila Convent recently as an attack on the rights of minorities, several minority associations and progressive organisations took out a silent march here on Wednesday. They condemned the incident and demanded action against those responsible for it. The protest rally led by Bishop of Mysore Thomas Antony Vazhapilly began from the premises of St. Philomena Church and proceeded through Ashoka Road, K.R. Circle, and Devarja Urs Road, before culminating at the office of the Deputy Commissioner. Later, leaders of various organisations handed over a memorandum to Deputy Commissioner Selvakumar, urging the Government to protect the interests of minorities in the State. People from Mandya, Hassan, Kodagu and Chamarajanagar also participated in the rally. Later, addressing the gathering, former Union Minister V. Srinivasa Prasad said that the attack on minorities had increased after the coalition government took over. Terming the defiling of the statue at the convent as an "unsavoury," he said that the act should be condemned by all those believed in secular values. All Christian institutions in the city remained closed on Wednesday.
