Varsity cracks down on students

Lucknow Vice-Chancellor suspends 83 leaders

Lucknow: Cracking the whip, the Lucknow University Vice Chancellor R.P.Singh on Wednesday suspended 83 student leaders, mostly belonging to the ruling Samajwadi Party and with alleged criminal background and barred their entry into the campus.

Speaking to newsmen here, Mr. Singh said he had furnished a list of 83 students to the district administration and asked it to ensure that they did not enter the campus and the hostels.

He said that notices were being issued to these students and they would be asked to reply within three days after which the process of their expulsion would begin.

Significantly, a majority of those suspended had association with the ruling Samajwadi Party and several of them had government security. The University has also mentioned in detail the criminal cases pending against these students which ranged from inciting violence to attempt to murder.

The Vice-Chancellor alleged that these students were always heavily armed and possessed latest weapons. He said the University had earlier suspended 52 students with criminal antecedents taking the total number of suspensions to 135.

He said the academic activities would begin only after the University was purged of the criminal elements.

Security cover reviewed

Meanwhile, under attack for providing security cover to the student leaders in violation of norms, the Uttar Pradesh Government has initiated a review exercise following an Allahabad High court order directing it to withdraw such facilities to ineligible persons.

``The court order has been received and its compliance will be ensured,'' State Home Secretary R M Srivastava told PTI here.

He said about 2,800 gunners had been provided to private persons and the government had started the review process. ``We will have to see who are covered by the court order,'' he said.

In reply to a question Mr. Srivastava said he did not have the figure of the students leaders enjoying the service.

The court had in its order on Tuesday said that having gunners had become a status symbol, and directed the State Government to withdraw such facilities from all ineligible private persons including certain student leaders and political workers.

The court had also directed the Home Secretary to file an affidavit of compliance by December 15 next. The court had observed that no exception could be made on the ground that there was some threat to the life of the person to provide security when he had criminal antecedents. -- PTI
