Coimbatore: Special Branch (Security) officers of the Tamil Nadu Police from Chennai arrived here on an advance security liaison (ASL) visit to review security arrangements for President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam's visit to Erode, Coimbatore and Pollachi on December 18 and 19. He will attend two functions at Erode on Monday morning before arriving in Coimbatore by helicopter at noon. Mr. Kalam is scheduled to attend four functions in Coimbatore from Monday afternoon to Tuesday afternoon. After attending a function at Pollachi, the President will leave for Thrissur in Kerala by air the same day. This is only a tentative schedule and a clear itinerary is expected within the next 48 hours, officials said. The ASL team comprises an Additional Deputy Superintendent of Police and two Deputy Superintendents of Police. It held discussions with officials from various Government agencies and the organisers of the functions. The team, along with Revenue and police officials, visited the place of stay of the President and the venues of his functions. Lacunae in terms of security perceptions or those relating to the convenience of the President at the venues were pointed out for rectification. The ASL team visited CODISSIA trade fair Grounds and CIT on Avanashi Road and Avanashilingam Deemed University and Corporation Kalaiarangam at R.S. Puram. In Erode, another ASL team took stock of the arrangements at both the venues and the helipad besides visiting the meeting venue at Pollachi, the police said.
NSG team
Another ASL team from the National Security Guards (NSG), New Delhi is expected within the next 48 hours. The convoy route, composition and others were discussed in the wake of the recent confusion that stalled the Prime Minister's convoy in Thiruvananthapuram. Following recent e-mail threats, the City and Rural Police brought all Internet cafes under the scanner.
