KOCHI: Removal of garbage from the city has been affected due to the shortage of lorries to transport waste. This is for the second time in the last two weeks that waste disposal has been hit. Last week, garbage removal was affected for two days together as the lorries that took garbage to Karnataka were blocked at the Kasaragod check-post. This time, it is the shortage of lorries for collecting and transporting waste that is worrying the civic authorities. No lorries came to collect garbage on Tuesday though the civic authorities were hopeful that the contractor would arrange some lorries for removal of garbage. On Wednesday, the contractor did not turn up till evening. Waste disposal will not be possible on Thursday also as a section of the trade unions and workers have called for a countrywide general strike. With garbage piling up and the civic administration failing to evolve viable steps to treat it, the city is facing serious health hazards created by the putrefying garbage. The decentralised waste collection and processing announced by the civic body is yet to take off. The Corporation is in the process of finding sponsors for supplying buckets for households. Legislators and civic representatives from the tourism sector have expressed apprehension that the tourism season will flop if the garbage heaps are not removed .
