CHENNAI : Most of the city's autorickshaws are likely to be off the road on Thursday with the left trade union CITU pledging its support for a nation-wide strike call. The strike has been called by employees of various Central Government employee unions to protest against the "anti labour policies" of the Central Government. They have also expressed resentment at the lowered provident fund interest rates, rising prices and neglect of the farm sector. Bank operations too are likely to be hit by the strike. State-owned transport corporations may not be affected greatly as the unions affiliated to the DMK and Congress are not participating in the protest. However, members of the leftist unions in the State are likely to strike work. Employees of the Chennai Telephones affiliated to the National Federation of Telecom Employees and the National Telecommunication Staff Union have announced support for the strike. Essential services including power, water, transport and milk are not likely to be affected as the State government staff union have not called for joining the strike. The government college teacher associations and university teacher unions have expressed support for the strike, meaning work in the government colleges would be affected. The Tamil Nadu Medical and Sales representatives association is also participating in the strike.
