CHENNAI: In an attempt to encourage entrepreneurship among young women, second year B.Com Bank Management students of Ethiraj College held a one-day exhibition of self-made products. Entrepreneurship Development lecturer Renuka Satish said the students were asked to research women entrepreneurs as a class project. She then asked them if they would like to give it a try and that is how the exhibition came about. "Participation Learning was introduced recently into the curriculum, where students actually have to apply their lessons practically. The marks for these are added to their internal assessment," said Ms. Satish. The products include paintings and art work priced as high as Rs.600 due to labour invested, cakes and chocolates, detergents and beaded jewellery. Darshana, who made money covers and gift wrappers, said this was a chance to familiarise herself with the process of selling. "I've sold many of the finger rings I made, so next time I'll make more of those. I've also got orders for bracelets and anklets. I didn't make them this time, but now I know what people want," she said. There were 20 stalls put up by the students. They said they learnt how to price their items, "because if they are priced too high, no one will buy " said one girl. Ms. Satish said she was thrilled with the innovation and enthusiasm the students have shown. "They have received many orders for their products," she said.
