CHENNAI : From elementary cursive writing and punctuation to idioms and nuance, the schooler's assimilation of the English language has been made more enjoyable in a new series brought out by publisher Orient Longman. The `Golden Gate- English for Schools' series for Standards I to VIII has reader-friendly design features, rich illustration and graded exercises to help the student grasp the language better. The Golden Gate series is slated for formal launch in New Delhi on Wednesday and subsequently in other important cities across the country. The launch in Chennai is scheduled for December 20. The publisher is bringing out 16 titles in the English Language Teaching (ELT) segment that comprises eight readers and an equal number of accuracy books for pronunciation, grammar, spelling and punctuation. The whole effort is directed at improving the classroom experience not just for students but teachers as well, said Vani Vasudevan, Publisher, ELT Schools, Orient Longman. "In a selective way, the books encourage readers to think up an equivalent phrase in their mother-tongue for certain stock expressions in English," she said. The content, presentation and design and visual elements follow the principles of current global research and enrich the narrative. A lot of thought has gone into the amount of text that can be assimilated on the basis of the reader's age. The storytelling schemata is to enrich understanding, stoke imagination and encourage readers to participate in the life of the tale itself, said Ms. Vasudevan. Conceptualised by M. L. Tickoo and R. Amritavalli, senior advisers to the National Council of Education Research and Training, the series is an attempt to promote holistic learning of the language. Orient Longman views the Golden Gate series as reinforcing its positioning as a publisher continually responsive to cutting edge research in classroom pedagogy that looks beyond examinations. The Golden Gate series is also Orient Longman's single biggest innovation after the hugely popular `Gulmohar' series that has risen to a flagship status since its launch 30 years ago.
