CHENNAI : D.K. Srinivasan, founder and honorary secretary of the Hindu Mission Hospital, Tambaram, has been honoured with the Dr. K. V. Thiruvengadam Award for Health Care for his dedicated service to the poor. Hosted jointly by the Rotary Club of Madras East and Chettinad Hospital and Research Institute, the award has been instituted in the name of Dr. Thiruvengadam, an eminent physician who specialized in chest medicine and allergy. Dr. Thiruvengadam was awarded the Padma Shri in 1981. Mr. Srinivasan, the first recipient of the award, has been recognised for his contribution to the health care of rural poor and urban slum dwellers through the Hindu Mission Hospital, which was started in 1982. Today, it has grown to be a multi-speciality hospital because of the commitment of Mr. Srinivasan and his team. Presenting the award comprising a citation and a plaque, N. Ravi, Editor of The Hindu , hailed the contribution of Mr. Srinivasan to the growth of the hospital. It was he who focussed on reaching out to the rural poor through outreach programmes and brought health care to villagers who otherwise could not afford it. A leprosy eradication programme and school outreach programmes were other examples of the work done by the hospital. Commending Dr. Thiruvengadam as a professional and a teacher, Mr. Ravi lauded his diagnostic skills at a time when modern diagnostic equipment was unavailable. Mr. Srinivasan said the award was recognition of the hospital team's contribution. The hospital has built up its assets of Rs.6 crore and the Valluvar Gurukulam for the poor girls had assets of Rs. 3 crore. Dr. Thiruvengadam lauded Dr. Srinivasan for his commitment to service and spirit of sacrifice. Anandhi Alagappan, dean of Chettinad Hospital and Research Institute and M.S. Ravi, president of Rotary Club of Madras East attended the function.
