Chennai: The Coast Guard organised a quiz competition for college students on Tuesday as part of its awareness campaign among the youth. With questions on `See Sea Environment,' the wing of the Defence forces gave away prizes worth Rs. 37,000 to six teams in quiz and six teams for the poster competition. Inspector-General Rajendra Singh, Commander, Coast Guard Region (East), said, "with a coastline of 1,362 nautical miles and 1.37 million sq. km area, the Coast Guard will soon be celebrating three decades of service to the nation soon. S.B. Venkatesh, Commandant, Commanding Officer, Coast Guard Ship Ranijindan, said that 116 students from 58 colleges participated. After the elimination round in the preliminaries, six teams were selected. The first three prize-winning teams got Rs. 7,500, Rs. 5,000 and Rs. 3,000 respectively. The three other teams were given consolation prizes of Rs. 1,000 each. Support was extended by the Department of Environment of the State Government. The department sponsored Rs. 20,000 towards the prize money. The first prize went to Madras Veterinary College, the second prize to New College and the third prize to Anna University.
