"Don't oppose VAT"

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president M.Krishnasswamy has appealed to traders not to oppose valued added tax system being introduced in the State from January 1.

In a statement here on Wednesday, Mr.Krishnasswamy said traders were allegedly making "false propaganda" that the introduction of VAT would lead to increase in the prices of essential commodities and it would eliminate small traders. On the other hand, the new taxation systemwould result in uniform taxation throughout the country. Moreover, the State Government had exempted small traders from paying tax if their annual turnover was less than Rs. 10 lakh.
