CHENNAI: Danseuse Chitra Visweswaran was conferred the Nrithya Kala Nipuna award by The Mylapore Fine Arts Club on Wednesday. Conferring the award and inaugurating the club's 55th Year Art Festival, Preetha Reddy, managing director, Apollo Hospitals group, said artists like Ms. Visweswaran represented a continuity with the great Indian classical tradition. Chennai was becoming India's cultural capital and music sabhas had the responsibility of identifying the right talent for promotion. Indian classical music was being increasingly used for alternative medicine therapies, she added. Ms. Visweswaran said she was privileged to learn dance under great gurus such as Vazhuvur Ramaiah Pillai. Dancer Sudharani Raghupathi also felicitated Ms. Visweswaran. Prizes were given to the winners of the music competition held by the sabha. The month-long festival features performances by exponents such as Veenai Gayathri, S. Sowmya, P. Unnikrishnan, T.N. Seshagopalan, Nithyasri Mahadevan, T. M. Krishna and Bombay Jayashree Ramnath.
