Rail electrification: inspection begins

Kayamkulam-Kollam stretch inspected


  • Inspection of the 64-km electrified Kollam- Thiruvananthapuram stretch today
  • Nod for locomotives on the Thiruvananthapuram-Kayamkulam stretch likely on Saturday

    Thiruvananthapuram: Commissioner for Railway Safety (CRS) Pranab Kumar Sen inspected the electrified 46-km Kayamkulam-Kollam stretch on Wednesday as part of giving the mandatory clearance to run electric locomotives on the Thiruvananthapuram-Ernakulam railway section.

    Mr. Sen travelled in a diesel locomotive from Kayamkulam to Kollam to carry out detailed inspection of the electrified section.

    The train formation comprising seven coaches and the locomotive left Kayamkulam junction at 2.45 p.m. and reached Kollam around 5.45 p.m.

    Mr. Sen was accompanied by Deputy Commissioner for Railway Safety Ashudosh; Chief Project Manager, Railway Electrification, John Thomas; Chief Electrical Distribution Engineer B.V. Chandrasekhar and Thiruvananthapuram Divisional Railway Manager S. Vijayakumaran.

    Mr. Sen will begin inspecting the 64-km electrified Kollam-Thiruvananthapuram Central stretch from 9 a.m. on Thursday. The team is expected to reach Thiruvananthapuram Central station by 2 p.m.

    Mr. Ashudosh would later travel in an electric locomotive from Thiruvananthapuram Central to Kollam, said Railway sources. Mr. Sen is expected to give the mandatory clearance to run electric locomotives on the Thiruvananthapuram-Kayamkulam stretch on Saturday.

    Temporary halt

    The Railways have provided a temporary halt for 2625/2626 Thiruvananthapuram Central-New Delhi-Thiruvananthapuram Central Kerala Express at Mavelikara station from January 1. The halt would be on an experimental basis for six months. The 2626 New Delhi-Thiruvananthapuram Kerala Express would depart from Mavelikara at 11.58 a.m. and the 2625 Thiruvananthapuram-New Delhi Kerala Express would depart at 1.18 p.m.
