Thiruvananthapuram: The State should aim at becoming self-sufficient in milk production, Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan has said. He was inaugurating `Ksheeradhara,' a programme aimed at enhancing milk production in the State, being implemented by the Kerala Livestock Development Board and the departments of Animal Husbandry and Dairy Development here on Wednesday. Milk production should be made a more viable business for farmers by improving the quality of the cattle breeds. The State should stop depending on the neighbouring States for its requirement of milk. `Ksheeradhara' was aimed at producing superior breeds of cattle which could give a better milk yield, said Mr. Achuthanandan. Minister for Animal Husbandry C. Divakaran, who presided over the function, said the programme would help the State attain self-sufficiency in milk production in three years. All facilities for the breeding programme would be made available at veterinary hospitals, he said.
