NEW DELHI: One of Delhi's landmarks, the Central Park of Connaught Place, has been re-developed by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation at a cost of Rs.6 crore and will be thrown open to the public on Thursday. Covering an area of 41,500 sq m and built above Rajiv Chowk metro station in the heart of the city, the Central Park had been taken over by the DMRC in 2001 when the area was needed for construction of two Metro stations below the surface. The park has since been re-developed according to international standards. The Corporation has taken up extensive landscaping in the park and lush "selection one'' grass, the best in India, has been planted over 27,000 sq m and hedge plants over 2,100 sq m. Nearly 700 trees and 2,750 shrubs have also been planted in the park. The species of trees and plants have been carefully selected because most of them are evergreen and flower at different times of the year. This ensures that the park remains a visual delight round the year. Some of the species that have been planted are white champa, royal palm, gulmohar, pink tabebuia, bottle brush, Indian laurel and Ashoka. The park also has four water bodies and 21 fountains, besides a water cascade. Lights have been provided in and around the fountains and cascade. In addition, the park has a 5,000 sq m quarter-arc shaped amphitheatre that has seven steps. Each step has the capacity to seat 50 people. The stage has an area of 60 sq m and the entry will be from B Block of Rajiv Chowk in front of Palika Bazaar. The Central Park has nine gates, of which two will open directly to the metro station. The total area of the footpath is 7,700 sq m.
