dated December 15, 1956: The Lamas at Ajanta

The Dalai Lama and the Panchen Lama prayed for an hour in front of an image of Lord Buddha in the historic Ajanta caves on December 12. Perhaps for the first time after several centuries, this one time "vihara" echoed with Buddhist hymns as the two Lamas and their followers chanted extracts from holy scriptures in chorus in cave number one. It is also for the first time that a Dalai Lama has visited these caves. The Dalai Lama and the Panchen Lama spent five hours visiting the caves and showed great interest in the world famous sculptures and paintings. A special officer of the Archaeological Department showed them round the caves.
