Johannesburg: Indian captain Rahul Dravid was adjudged the Cricketer of the Year at the Castrol Awards function here on Wednesday. The other contenders for the top prize (for an Indian cricketer) were Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Harbhajan Singh and Irfan Pathan. Dravid and leg-spinner Anil Kumble won the awards for the best batting and bowling performance in Tests. Both performed their feats in the 2005 Test against Pakistan at the Eden Gardens. Mahendra Singh Dhoni (against Sri Lanka in Jaipur) and Sachin Tendulkar (versus Pakistan in Kochi) took the batting and bowling honours respectively in the ODIs. Legendary opener Sunil Gavaskar gave away a special award to maestro Sachin Tendulkar for surpassing his record of 34 Test hundreds. South African heroes Allan Donald, Jonty Rhodes, Gary Kirsten and Shaun Pollock were presented with special awards for their contribution to India-South Africa cricket. Respected cricket administrator Ali Bacher was also honoured. Harsha Bhogle anchored the programme.
