Elders pass bill to make child marriage void

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Rajya Sabha on Thursday passed a bill to make child marriages null and avoid. The Prevention of Child Marriage Bill, 2004 also provides for appointment of child marriage prevention officers by State Governments.

In case of such marriages being declared null and void, the husband or, if he is minor at the time of child marriage, his guardian will pay maintenance to the minor girl till her re-marriage.

Replying to a debate, Minister of State for Women and Child Development Renuka Chaudhary said every child marriage, whether solemnised before or after this Act came into force, could be declared void at the option of the contracting party.

Members stressed the need for effective implementation of the legislation as the first law enacted in 1927 failed to check child marriage.
