3,000 arrested in Assam

Sushanta Talukdar

GUWAHATI: The general strike on Thursday affected normal life in Assam with banks and financial institutions remaining closed. Public vehicles were off the road, train movement was disrupted and thin attendance was reported in government offices.

Over 3,000 people were arrested for picketing in front of government offices and squatting on railway tracks in different parts of the State. In the city, private city buses were off the roads. The intra-district bus terminus at Adabari wore a deserted look with no long distance buses operating during the day.

Seventy-one persons were arrested from the Guwahati Railway station. The CPI(M) State unit congratulated the people for the success of the strike. It condemned "repressive" measures such as arrest of picketers by the police.
