Shooting

INDORE: Pistol shooters Samaresh Jung and Shweta Choudhary shot good scores to stay in lead in their respective events and redeem themselves after a somewhat glum Asian Games campaign in Doha. Jung fired 552 in the men's free pistol event, two points better than his Doha scores that had placed him 14th in the Asian field. At the 50th National shooting championship on Thursday, Jung had a series of 92, 92, 96, 93, 90 and 89 to lead the 53-strong field midway through the event at the Reoti Ranges near here. Twenty-four shooters will shoot on Friday before the top eight qualify for the free pistol final. However, Jung, the golden boy of Melbourne Commonwealth Games, was well below his National mark of 565 achieved early this year in Australia. Following Jung were Gurjeet Singh of Army and Omkar Singh of Navy, both firing 550. Zakir Khan, who was a part of Indian free pistol team at Doha, was a disappointment here. Khan, who achieved 541 last week in Doha, managed 535 for the 11th place and fell out of the race for the final. Shweta led the 27-member field in the women's 25m sports pistol by two points, ahead of Army's Saroja Kumari and Railways' Anisa Sayyed. She had a series of 47, 47, 49, 48, 49 and 48 in precision shooting for a total of 288 out of 300. This was one point below what she managed in Doha to finish 21st. The results (leading, top eight): Men: 50m free pistol: 1. Samaresh Jung 552, 2. Gurjeet Singh 550, 3. Omkar Singh 550, 4. Amanpreet Singh 549, 5. Mahavir Singh 544, 6. Mohammed Kamaluddin 544, 7.
