NEW DELHI: An Assistant Commissioner of Police who smashed the camera of a Press Trust of India (PTI) news agency photographer outside Indira Gandhi International Airport here on Thursday morning was transferred to the Foreigners' Regional Registration Office (FRRO) soon after. An inquiry by the Special Commissioner of Police (Intelligence and Operations) has been ordered against him.
Protest
The incident took place when photographers were vying with each other to take snaps of a protest demonstration at the airport during the nationwide general strike called by trade unions on Thursday. As the policemen tried to prevent the photographers from moving ahead, ACP B.B. Choudhary, who was heading the police team, snatched the camera from the PTI cameraman Kamal Singh and smashed it on the ground. Anguished and angr, the journalists lodged a protest with Delhi's Police Commissioner K.K. Paul, following which the officer was transferred and the inquiry by Special Commissioner of Police U.K. Katna was ordered.
