Soccer Club upsets Indian Bank

CHENNAI: Seasoned campaigner Indian Bank suffered a shock 2-0 defeat at the hands of Soccer Club in a CFA senior division league match at the Nehru stadium on Thursday.

Fresh from finishing runner-up in the south zone third division national league qualifier in Chalakudy, the Bank side was expected to have an easy outing. But Soccer Club attacked with confidence built purposeful moves. Speed and long aerial passes unsettled the Bank plans and Soccer club opened up several avenues to the rival end.

It was, however, only at the stroke of half time that Bank goalkeeper Edward Felix was foxed by a beautiful header by P. Karthik off a long cross from the left flank by Kumaran.

While Indian Bank tried to regroup in the second session, the inability to knit good moves and the easy interceptions by the rival players proved stumbling blocks. In addition, goalkeeper Sakthivel came up with some wonderful saves, particularly to check Mike Chinedu's free kicks.

Soccer Club made the issue safe through a flowing right footer by Bharathi Raja in the 50th minute. Earlier, Chennai Port SC edged YMSC 3-2. Mohan, Satheesh and Sagadevan scored for the winner while Sanjay and Ramkumar reduced the margin.
