AIIMS doctors on hunger strike

Prashant Pandey

NEW DELHI: Following the passing in the Lok Sabha of the Bill providing 27 per cent reservation to Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in government-aided educational institutions, a dozen members of the Resident Doctors' Association (RDA) of the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences went on an indefinite hunger strike on Thursday evening.

RDA president Kumar Harsh said a meeting of the general body of the RDA took place in the evening where it was decided that a dozen doctors would begin an indefinite strike from 9 p.m.

He said the doctors would, however, continue to attend duty and services at the AIIMS would not be affected. The Bill did not take into account the Veerappa Moily Committee report that had suggested the implementation of reservation in a phased manner. He said that since the matter was before the Supreme Court, the Government should have waited for a decision before passing the Bill.

In May last the AIIMS and other medical colleges in Delhi witnessed anti-reservation agitations.
