Impact of strike minimal in State Government offices

  • APSRTC employees stay away in view of impending union elections
  • Chennai-bound Coromandal Express stopped for nearly 30 minutes

VIJAYAWADA : Customer services in banks, insurance companies and public sector telecom offices were affected to a large measure in the city on Thursday due to the all-India strike, for which the trade unions and employees' unions gave a call in protest against the `anti-employee' policies of the UPA Government.

Public sector banks and insurance companies suspended their normal customer services after displaying a notice about the strike. But the impact of the strike was minimal in State Government offices. The APSRTC was able to run its services without any problem, as the employees of the corporation did not join the strike in view of their impending elections to the union.

    `Rail roko'

Activists of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) and some other workers' organisations of the Indian Railways organised a `rail roko' by stopping the Chennai-bound Coromandal Express for nearly 30 minutes.

The West Krishna unit of Joint Action Committee (JAC) of employees, teachers and workers mainly spearheaded the strike in the city, while the employees' unions of banks and insurance companies too pitched in with their own protest demonstrations.

At a demonstration organised near the sub-collector's office, representatives of unions affiliated to the JAC raised slogans in support of their demands. The Krishna District Bank Employees' Coordination Committee organised a centralised demonstration in front of Canara Bank on Eluru Road.

The Machilipatnam units of Insurance Corporation Employees Union and the Insurance Employees Union organised demonstrations.
