dated December 16, 1956: Adoption of daughters

The Hindu Adoption and Maintenance Bill, the last instalment of the Hindu Code legislation, was passed by the Lok Sabha on December 14, after seven hours' debate. The Bill allows the adoption of daughters and also provides rights for women to adopt. As the Bill has already been passed by the Rajya Sabha, and no alterations have been made by the Lower House, it will go to the President for assent. The Minister for Legal Affairs, Mr. H.V. Pataskar, who piloted the Bill, said the present measure was not meant purely from the religious point of view but only as a social reform. Adoption in modern times was not a moral or a religious necessity but a social one. It would have, therefore, to be judged from the secular point of view.
