VIJAYAWADA: Safe driving is something that requires constant effort to be driven into public consciousness. In working towards creating awareness, the State Government has ensured that periodical drives and campaigns are conducted in all parts of the State. In accordance with the orders of Principal Secretary of Transport Department, the road safety campaign was begun in the district from Friday. To be continued for the next 10 days, the drive will involve staff of the police, transport and all the related departments. The motto is to educate the people about the need for safe driving methods. Deputy Transport Commissioner M. Ratna Manikyam said five special squads were formed to conduct special inspections all over the district. In most accidents, there will be several shortcomings. Some are found driving without having a proper driving licence. The special inspections were aimed at catching such people who drive in violation of the traffic rules. Ms. Manikyam said stringent action would be taken against those found violating the rules. Road safety would remain the prime objective of various programmes of the department. Close watch will be there to check whether car owners and drivers are wearing seat belts. Two-wheeler drivers should wear helmets.
