Autos to go off the road

Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: Auto rickshaws will go off the roads from Sunday midnight for a day to protest against the order making it mandatory for auto rickshaws to have digital meters installed by January 1.

Announcing the decision on Friday, Anti-Auto Digital Meters Struggle Committee president Mohd. Amanullah Khan contended that digital meters were also prone to tampering and that their installation would be an added burden on auto drivers.

The auto drivers are also planning to take out a rally on Monday from Baghlingampally to Indira Park. The committee members also regretted the move to levy an annual `Green Tax' of Rs. 200 on auto-rickshaws that are seven-year-old and urged the Government to withdraw it.
