SALEM: The Pride of India Award of the Golden Gates Matriculation Higher Secondary School was conferred on former Commissioner of Namakkal Municipality P. Kanthaswamy for his efforts to implement the solid waste management. Writer Sivashankari presented the award to him at a function held here on Friday.

Mr. Kanthaswamy had successfully executed the solid waste management scheme in Namakkal town, which led to the achievement of `zero garbage' status. The municipality had also received model eco city certificate and ISO 14001 certificate. The school, recognising his services, had selected him for the award.

Ms. Sivashankari said officials and the people in other towns should take Namakkal as an example and strive hard to achieve the `zero garbage' status.
