SALEM: Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) has decided to introduce activity-based learning (ABL) system in 174 more government primary schools in the district shortly. The district has already 210 schools implementing the system. The progress of the children studying under the ABL system in various competencies is far better when compared to those in other schools.
Training
Hence, the SSA has decided to extend the system to 174 more schools. More than 10,000 students will be brought under the system in addition to the 12,000 children being covered under it currently, according to SSA officials. They said the SSA had given training to all the primary school teachers in ABL methods. They had been trained on innovative teaching methods, determining minimum levels of learning, evaluating the performance of students, involving students in various learning activities and teaching using the materials provided for the ABL. The activities under the ABL would ensure a maximum level of student participation in teaching and learning process. "The important role of the teachers in the ABL schools is to motivate the students to learn," the officials said. The district had already received the learning materials for extending the ABL system, they added. The education department had selected 53 teachers for visiting the Chennai Corporation schools that were implementing the ABL system. Assistant Education Officers would also visit the schools, the officials said.
