Oruvan `Oruvan' directed by Vinu Anand revolves around a psychopath who rapes and murders women. The film is intended to be a psychological thriller. The director has deftly presented the actions of the psychopath aided by apt background music to create suspense-filled moments. But the psychological content of the film is superficial. Reji Nair has written the script. The film begins with the camera focussing on the psychopath amidst workers engaged in the manufacture of fireworks. It focuses so much on the psychopath that little attention is paid to the other characters. The film delves into the lives of a group by pyrotechnic workers. The workers, led by Bharathan asan (Lal), earn their livelihood by providing fireworks to temples and other festivals. One day, Bharathan asan spots a youth lying unconscious on the road. He brings him home and looks after him. When the man (Sivan) regains consciousness and recuperates, Bharathan allows him to stay on. Soon, Sivan proves himself to be adept in the manufacture of fireworks. The villagers are unaware that Sivan is a psychopath who has escaped from the police. He is on a killing spree. First, he murders a prostitute in the village and when a co-worker becomes suspicious, Sivan kills him. Later, during a temple festival, he causes an explosion to kill Bharathan asan. He makes it seem like an accident and continues to stay on in his mentor's home, pretending to be the family's protector. Sivan rapes Bharathan's wife (Meera Vasudevan) and also attempts to molest their adolescent daughter. Indrajith in the role of the cruel and cunning Sivan renders a convincing performance. While Lal acts effortlessly, Meera Vasudevan as the distressed and tormented wife emotes her feelings well. The cast also includes Prithviraj, Mala Aravindan, Salim Kumar, T.G. Ravi and Sreeraman. The lyrics of Vayalar Sarath Chandra Varma are set to music by Ousepachan. The songs have been rendered by Shahbas Aman, Manjari, Ousepachan and Arjun. Jibbu Jacob cranks the camera. `Oruvan' is produced by Saseendra Varma and Ajith Varma for Varma Film Corporation.
